Family travel 2040

An exploration of autonomous vehicle incar entertainment for the family in 2040.

In service to World Health Organization Sustainable Development Goals

CONTEXT

Among those who consider their vehicle more important today versus pre-COVID, the top reason cited is that it offers a space outside of work and the house to relax, enjoy hobbies, escape stress, etc. As a result personal vehicle has now become the “Third Space” where time is spent. This presents a unique opportunity to create experiences for both passengers and drivers including gaming, entertainment, productivity and even mediation. In this context using AR and MR technologies can transform the mobility experience through interaction with the vehicle while traveling or in stationary third space use-cases.

With the Honda Space-Hub concept as the muse, the student team will explore the integration opportunities of extended reality systems to be deployed into the ETC Mobility Experience Lab prototype environment. The focus of the experiences will be to increase the owners value proposition through various XR third space user scenario demonstrations.

Students visit the Honda 99P Lab for a briefing and workshop.

CMUs legacy in autonomous mobility, the proliferation of video game entering the automotive environment and the onslaught of consumer-oriented autonomous driving technology made the exploration fitting for the ETC. Students targeted experiences for Level 4 driving automation.

Students were invited to share their early ideas with executives from Honda headquarters.
