the starting point

the global strategy

The World Health Organization aims to improve global health by ensuring safe management of water, sanitation and hygiene services (WASH). Their global strategy aims to combat NTDs through better water and sanitation, aligned with SDG 6 targets through healthcare facilities, education, investment advocacy and emergency response.

the PHYSICAL model

The World Shoe Fund is a social enterprise, closely that manufactures and distributes specially designed, sustainable footwear to impoverished communities, primarily in Africa, to prevent injuries and soil-transmitted diseases. They have “productized” the WHO’s WaSH program through their in-field intervention model emphasizing hygiene education (Wash) and wearing shoes (Wear).

the DIGITAL tool

The World Shoe Fun was looking for an accessible tool to augment the their Wash & Wear program. The Step Up team were charged to create a mechanism for influencing longstanding behavior with the World Shoe as a central character.

playtesting in ghana

Master’s students from the Entertainment Technology Center conducted play testing in Accra, Ghana receiving both written and visual feedback.
